BACKGROUND
The role of the Education Department is to provide support services to Yorkton Tribal Council First Nations that will enable them to meet the needs of their students.
In the critical areas of Literacy, Numeracy, Student Retention, Cultural Awareness and Special Education, schools require the support of the Tribal Council. Funding for Support Services. Second level Services, Director of Education Services, and Superintendent Services comes from core educational funding through IANDC. Additional support service is realized through IANDC New Paths Proposal- Based Funding (where Ochapowace First Nation School is affiliated with Yorkton Tribal Council).
In order to support the schools, the Tribal Council employs the support of educational specialists who provide contracted services in support of these critical areas. Supervision, Curriculum, Professional Development and student assessment are provided in this manner.
CURRENT SITUATION
Director of Education, Assistant Director, Superintendent, 4 Speech Language Pathologists, 4 Curriculum Specialists in Literacy and Numeracy, Differentiated Coach, Treaty Education Coach, Occupational Therapist, an Educational Psychologist and a Graduation coach as well as an occasional Information Technology contractor are contracted by YTC for support.
Each year a review of the consultants takes place. New yearly contracts are offered to qualified consultants according to the needs indicated by principals, the performance and reliability provided in past years and the willingness of the consultants to continue in the current role.
PARTNERSHIP
Yorkton Tribal Council (YTC) Education department shares a partnership with various educational organizations such as Sask. Ministry through the Invitation Shared Service Initiative (ISSI) and Education Strategic Sector Plan (ESSP). YTC has a positive working relationship with other educational institutions within the Yorkton area such as Parkland Regional College and Treaty 4 Education Alliance. Yorkton Tribal Council Education department is committed to the partnership through sharing duties when planning projects, professional developments and sharing the knowledge and expertise from YTC staff. Yorkton Tribal Council education continues to reach out to other institutions to develop a relationship where sharing promising practices is vital. YTC has entered in to a project with the University Of Regina “Faculty Of Science” under which graduate students get to spend some quality time with High School students within the YTC school district. YTC continues to support initiatives put forth by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN)
