What is a Secure Status Card?
The Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) is the newest type of status card issued centrally by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC). This card has a number of security features in comparison to the older Certificates of Indian Status (CIS), which includes:
- laser-engraved information burned directly into the card;
- raised letter and numbers on the surface;
- patterns of extremely fine line not easily scanned or copied;
- ultra-violet imaging and printing only visible with special equipment
- Seconday photo image of the cardholder visible from both sides of the card
- toll-free number to call to confirm card is valid
- machine-readable zone to facilitate Canada-U.S. border crossing
What do I need to apply?
- Valid, government issued photo identification (Includes name, date of birth, photo, and signature)
For example: driver’s licence, passport, canadian military identification document, provincial/territorial identification card, provincial/territorial/federal Correctional Services identity document. Your identity document must not be expired.
If you do not have one of the above mentioned documents, you can use more than one of the following combined together to fulfill the mentioned requirements: provincial/territorial health card, government employee identification card, NEXUS/FAST card, firearms license, Certificate of Indian Status (CIS).
*If you don’t think you have adequate documentation, contact us, and we can inform you of the various options for you to still apply! - Registration Number
- Name Linking Document
If you changed your name, a legal document linking your previous name with your current name must be provided.
For example: a marriage certificate, a divorce order, or an amended birth certificate with your current name and the names of your parents (long-form).
You can also expect that we will take a passport-style photo of you when you attend your appointment.
